Foundation of the “DeepSea Mining Alliance” association in Hamburg (4/16/2014)

Germany as an industrial nation is highly dependent on the import of mineral or metal resources. Sources which have not been considered until now are the marine mineral resources, which in recent times are enjoying more and more increasing interests and which might provide in future a considerable contribution to the security of supply on metal resources.

Backed up by the National Masterplan Maritime Technologies (NMMT) of the German government and corresponding activities the idea and the advantage of deep-sea mining gained more and more interests and supporters. Based on this development the DeepSea Mining Alliance association was founded on April 9th 2014 in Hamburg. Main objectives of the association are the preparation of commercial, technological and scientific projects on deep-sea mining as well as a better coordination of national and international activities on an environmentally friendly and sustainable exploration and exploitation of marine mineral resources. Furthermore the coordinated and balanced representation of interests regarding political, economic and societal aspects and problems will be considered.

Founding members were 17 companies and institutions like Bauer Maschinen, Siem Offshore Contractors, Wärtsilä Deutschland, the shipping company Harren and Partner, IMS Engineering, and the classification societies Lloyd’s Register and DNV GL. Furthermore some highly specialized and qualified companies on marine technology like EvoLogics, MBT, HYDROMOD Service and Develogic as well as the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen) and the Technical University of Clausthal joined the association. A number of further membership applications are announced.

As the Chairman of the foundation board Mr Leonhard Weixler from Bauer Maschinen was elected. Mr Michael Jarowinsky and Mr Johannes Post were elected as managing directors.
